Synopsis

27 years ago, Bo-yeong Kang (Mi-hee Oh) started her career as a teacher in a small village. She met Jung-kil Kong (Seong-mo Jeong), who seemed like a respectable gentleman and their relationship developed into a romantic relationship. Jung-kil even promised to marry her at some point and, not long after, Bo-yeong became pregnant with his child.

Bo-yeong then learned to her horror that Jung-kil was actually married to another woman. Furthermore, Jung-kil's wife Yong-shim (Hyeon-kyun Kim) and her mother-in-law confronted Bo-yeong about her pregnancy and even assaulted Bo-yeong in front of Jung-kil. At this point Bo-yeong swore she would get revenge some day.

That opportunity arose shortly after Bo-yeong delivered her baby in the hospital. Fate had it that Jung-kil's wife Yong-shim also gave birth to her baby in the same hospital. Bo-yeong then took advantage of the odd twist of fate and switched their new born babies in order for her own daughter to grow up in an affluent family and to exact revenge on the man who betrayed her and his wife who asaulted her. As the two daughters grew up, Bo-yeong felt indifference towards the girl she raised, while wishing nothing but happiness for her true daughter ...

The four siblings in the Gung family were named after precious jewels: eldest daughter Bi Chwi (Jade), eldest son San Ho (Coral), second daughter Ryu Bi (Ruby), and the youngest son, Ho Bak (Amber). Like an assortment of beautiful gems, their colours may clash and their sharp edges chip away at each other. Using an analogy of a bowl of rice with assorted ingredients to illustrate the workings of a family, the key to a great dish is using the right balance of ingredients in order to create a good mixture. Assorted Gems tells the story of the different lives of the family members and how they learn from their clashes to find the perfect balance.
